The Write-To-Heal Retreat's been in the works for two years now, and we're almost ready to open registration! Here's a sneak peak at what we're planning!
I’m thrilled to announce that registration opens soon for the first Write-to-Heal Retreat at Civana Wellness Resort & Spa in Carefree, Arizona, May 9-13, 2023.
What is a Write-to-Heal Retreat? Simply put, it’s a community of women writers resting, rejuvenating, and writing together through real life.
Since 2014, I’ve been honored to bring writers together and support them as they navigate life and all its seasons. And so, when I discovered Civana in 2021, I immediately began dreaming of bringing writers together in this warm, sunny, restorative environment.
Registration opens soon for this special Write-to-Heal Retreat, and here’s some info about how the retreat came to be.

Developing the Write-to-Heal Retreat
In 2021, I’d gone through a series of personal challenges (ahem, isn’t it fair to say we all did?)
I’d been saving up my money, looking for an affordable-yet-meaningful place to reset my nervous system and jumpstart my personal writing practice. Did anything like this exist? I had serious doubts, but I kept dreaming and researching different places where I might get away for a few days to recharge and renew — all the while spending some impactful time writing.
And then, I learned about Civana.
I don’t know how others describe it, but as a born-and-bred Midwesterner who barely tolerates the dreary winter months (and the seasonal affective symptoms they regularly bring), I describe Civana as an oasis of healing and rejuvenation.
Nestled in the Sonoran Desert just outside of Scottsdale, Civana offers
• Access to 20 wellness professionals
• 2 selections per day from a menu of 70+ weekly programs
• Delicious, healthy meals that accommodate every dietary need
• 5 fitness and movement studios
• A world-class spa, and
• A setting that (at least for someone like little-ole, Midwestern me) works WONDERS.
My first stay at Civana in 2021 was all I could have hoped for and more — so much so that I went back the following year.
I appreciated the resort’s philosophy — that wellness is a personal journey and not a prescribed destination — and I loved how welcoming-yet-unobtrusive and supportive the staff was. The overall vibe was one of healing and peace, with a community committed to providing paths of change, growth, and discovery.
The Write-to-Heal Retreat at Civana Wellness Resort & Spa will be a one-of-a-kind experience, with activities in writing and wellness.
I’ve gathered a team of writers and wellness & healing experts to help me facilitate the Write-to-Heal Retreat, and we’ll offer daily programming tailored to the needs of our intimate group (8-10 attendees max).
Write-to-Heal Retreat offerings include wellness activities to encourage self-love and trust, guided writing exercises, art therapy, and workshops in self-care — all designed to help empower you and support you in your writing and your personal healing process, whatever that might be.
Designed for experienced and new writers alike, Write-To-Heal will be an immersive, four-night retreat with comfortable accommodations, all meals, daily yoga and wellness experiences, one 60-minute spa service of your choosing, in-depth workshops led by writing and wellness experts, and, of course, ample time to just be.
We’ll introduce you to the science behind therapeutic writing, as well as how to imbue it into your daily routine to better help you process challenging experiences. We'll nurture your spirit and support you as you process writing blocks and/or difficult memories.
For 5 days, forget about cooking, cleaning, and concerns about managing life. When you get to Civana, we’ll celebrate you through writing and wellness.

This sounds so delightful, but I can't justify taking the time away from school and I would need to save up. I hope that it is wonderful for those who are able to attend!
Okay, this sounds AMAZING and you look resplendent in those photos. I peeked at the resort day rates and I think it may be a 'save up for it' situation for me at this time, but I look forward to hearing more about it.
