Oh, Christine! I've got goosepimples on my skin and tears on my eyes reading this. I am SO GLAD you were there. And Nate's kindness to the driver (and his wife) was so beautiful. Thank you.
I'm behind on my reading but sooooooo glad to have scrolled back through my inbox and found this post. xxx
This was such a tense read Christine! How lucky everyone was that you were there to look out for everyone. Very tough to do after something so traumatic!
You made me tear up. Your writing, as Carol says, is so evocative, and as a fellow mom of boys/young men, I so appreciate the care & compassion your showed to everyone involved in the incident. May all of our children encounter kind adults like you during tough, scary times; may we BE those adults for others.
My youngest son (now 18) was first grade-ish age and biking home from baseball practice when he had a bike accident. His front bike tire hit a stone & he went down & was bleeding. Thankfully, another kind, caring adult stopped, assessed the situation, got my name & number from my son, called me, and stayed w him until I arrived. (I'm tearing up again writing this. The kindness of strangers to our children means so much!)
Also: one of my sisters-in-law msg'd me this weekend, asking how I'd survived parenting 4 boys. The reason? Her son is now middle school-aged and came home w a swollen face after an afternoon of biking with friends. Said son was pretty tight-lipped about the whole thing, but a friend piped up: "Oh that? That's probably from when he hit car." So yeah -- middle school boys & bikes! I'll share this via my Building Boys Bulletin (newsletter) & social media.
Beautiful Christine! I felt like I was right there on the corner with you. Thanks for the reminder as well. Not just for the bikers but for the motorists too. Extra caution always. Especially during warmer weather when bikes are everywhere.
